It is difficult to imagine a life without Christ once we have experienced His love, but there are many people around us who have never allowed Christ’s love and forgiveness to be born in their hearts. Could it be that we need to be reminded that we are called to be expressions of that love to them? A light that points the way to Christ? A “fleshed-out” example of unconditional acceptance? This is the last study in our journey through Romans. And in it Paul shows us his emotions in this final chapter as he writes his personal greetings to his friends in Rome. Paul had a purpose for his life and he knew what it was. He was an incredible pioneer of our faith and didn’t let anything distract him from his excitement and commitment to his mission. Today we want to remind ourselves of our ultimate purpose as followers of Christ, no matter what job we have in life. Today marks the beginning of the celebration known as Advent. Advent, in Latin, means 'coming'—the coming of Jesus into the world. It’s traditionally celebrated on the four Sundays prior to Christmas day. It’s meant as a time to prepare and remember the real meaning of Christmas. So with glad hearts we welcome you to our sermon series called The Advent of Christ. Starting today and then over the next 3-Sundays we’re going to share with you about 4-key aspects of Advent. This is a very special time of year—a time for reflection, a time for caring and sharing and a time for giving thanks. But over the years something has changed. Thanksgiving is so good and we enjoy it so much. But what has been changing is that we express our thanks less and less—almost as if we take it for granted or that we’re entitled to it. In today’s study Paul continues to stress the need for accepting and building up our fellow Christians. We might not always feel like accepting some people, but acceptance of others is a characteristic that should define those who follow Christ. Most of us are familiar with product warning labels. A warning label is designed to protect us from harm. Disagreement over personal convictions is a common thing in Christianity. Paul knew that he must address this issue right away, before it caused a lack of unity in the church. Our tendency is to stay away from people who do not believe just exactly like we do. As we’ll read in today’s text, Rom 14:1-23, sometimes we have to agree to disagree but it shouldn’t change how we relate to each other as fellow Christians. Let’s talk about it.
