Today’s text reminds the Corinthians of their initial enthusiasm for the Jerusalem collection and of their delight that God could use them to help other believers. Their enthusiasm was contagious. But a year has passed and Paul was worried that the Corinthians would give grudgingly now as their enthusiasm waned. In today’s study we’ll talk about three men who will be coming to Corinth to help collect the Corinthian's contribution to the needs of suffering Christians in Jerusalem. And the battle cry will be to “finish what you started” and having “transparency and accountability” in all things, particularly church financial issues. At Christmas the color Green is just about everywhere—the garlands, the wreath and of course the tree. The Green decorations of Christmas speak of the promise of life and hope in a season of barren trees and gloomy skies. The birth of Christ also speaks of that promise. ‘Tis the season. Every year we that around this time because, well, it IS the season. Most of the time we know what that “season” is. For instance today is the Sunday after Thanksgiving so it’s the season for shopping. But that’s not all. Have you ever considered this is also a season for sighing? That’s right, sighing. Sighing is defined like this: to emit a long, deep, audible breath expressing sadness, relief, tiredness, or a similar feeling. So what does this have to do with ‘Tis the season you ask? Repentance is a difficult concept to understand. What does repentance look like? How do we know if someone is truly repentant? Is being sorrowful all that’s needed to show repentance? Thanksgiving! It is one of the happiest days of the year. It is a special time for families and friends to get together and enjoy each other’s company and share in the abundance of food available to us. Also during this time many will pause to consider our blessings and to thank God for all that He has given us. As we consider our blessings and think about the many things that have come our way, surely we should be “humbly grateful.” Much has been given to us therefore we have a tremendous obligation to respond in kind.
