In our journey today we’re going to begin with Paul's command to the Corinthians to not be “unequally yoked” with unbelievers and discuss exactly what that means. We’ll see light and darkness can’t be in fellowship. Christ and Satan can’t work together. Have you ever heard the phrase “Freedom is never free?” It sounds like a paradox when you say it, but it is true—“Freedom is never free.” In the same way, forgiveness is never free. That, too, sounds untrue at first. But before forgiveness takes place there is always a price to be paid. So how do freedom and forgiveness relate to each other? In today’s passage we're going to talk about Paul’s Hardships. We’ll read about his commendation of himself and his co-workers to the Corinthians but it wasn’t bragging. He also offers evidence that they have not been false apostles. Rather they have faithfully represented Christ through every kind of suffering and God's power has been obvious in and through them. He finishes by stating warmly that his heart remained wide open to the church in Corinth and he asked them to open their hearts to him again. It’s going to be an exciting study so let’s get to it. Many people are familiar with 1 Cor 13. It’s a favorite that used many times in weddings. But Paul didn’t write this so that people would have something to read at weddings. Paul wrote this chapter to give the Corinthian church the solution to their problem of division. Today’s text describes an appeal to those in Corinth who know Paul. Here we’ll find that Christ's love compels Paul to continue to urge all people that they be reconciled to God through faith in Christ, just as he was. He tells them that in Christ, God is not counting people's sins against them, but instead giving them credit for Christ's righteous life. Now, we know we shouldn’t have to worry about God paying attention to our prayers. He loves us and He listens to our prayers...but why?! Because He cares for us right?! All of our prayers are important to God. But today we want to introduce you to a way of praying that is guaranteed to get God’s attention more than any other kind of prayer. Last time, chapter 4 ended with references to the great suffering experienced by Paul and his fellow evangelists. And we know that Paul had unescapable threats to his physical life. But he was prepared for that. In fact, he longed for what would come after that moment. So how did he not become distracted? Have you ever acted in a disgraceful or dishonest way before? At one point or another in life many of us probably have. Did we mean it? Did we know better? In today’s study Paul insisted that he and his co-workers for Christ would never act in a way that was disgraceful or dishonest, though he knew some were blinded by Satan from believing their message about Jesus. Today we’re going to talk about Paul's comparison of the glory of God as revealed in two covenants The first is the Old Covenant with Israel, second is the far greater glory revealed in the New Covenant of God's grace through faith in Christ. The glory of the Old Covenant is fading just as it did on Moses' face after he had been with God. Those who come to God through faith in Christ are forgiven for their sins and able to look on God's glory. The veil of unbelief must be removed by the Spirit through Christ.
