The text today emphasizes that those who truly trust God don’t settle for merely appearing religious. They give up trying to control the world with their words and their anger. They humbly receive the Word God has planted in them, listen to it and proceed to do what it says. Part of what the Word says to us is that we should keep control over our words, to care for those who are weak and suffering and to keep ourselves from being polluted by the world around us. Today we conclude our amazing journey through the Book of Nehemiah. You would think that the last chapter of this great book would contain encouraging and compelling stories of how God’s people took their spiritual commitment to the next level. Frankly, this script does not have a happy ending. Within a relatively short period of time, the children of Israel went spiritually flat and returned to their old ways of doing things which violated God’s laws and allowed the world’s system to press them into its mold. Today we start our study in the book of James. The letter reads like a Monday morning office memo. From the beginning James expects his readers to put their faith into action. He addresses practical issues that are as current as this morning’s newspaper. He tells us that the faith that Christians claim must be demonstrated in all the situations and circumstances of life—at work, at home, in the neighborhood, in church. And trials and hardships shouldn’t be seen as hindrances to faith, but as opportunities to exercise healthy faith. Knowing God’s Word is not enough. We’ve got to apply that knowledge to our everyday lives—real faith is the application of God’s truth to ourselves. So let’s begin.  Thanks for listening. Blessings and love in Christ! Today we’ll come across a situation where the Israelites are faced with a national referendum. But instead of taking a vote, they cast lots to determine what should be done. They didn’t believe in “luck” or “chance.” They actually were so committed to the sovereignty of God that they knew God would direct the outcome of the lots according to His divine providence. Today we’re going to study the book of Philemon. It’s only 25-verses but its chock full of some amazing teaching. This book could be summed up as a personal letter of reconciliation. It will urge us to consider what divides us as brothers and sisters in Christ and it will challenge us to ask God to obliterate those walls and bring us together. Thanks for listening. Have you ever made a vow? If you’re married you certainly did when you pledged your life to your spouse and to God. Maybe you’ve made a vow to do something or not to do something. Vows are for real and God takes them very seriously for He is a covenant-keeping God. Today we’re going to learn about 4 vows, or promises, that the people of God made in Nehemiah 10. Today we conclude our short study of Titus. In chapter 3 Paul reminds Titus of 7-positive behaviors and 7-contrasting sins, which he insists are taught correctly. In addition false teachers were to be cut off and not given a public platform. We’ll also talk about how believers shouldn’t waste time bickering, but focus on good works and urgent needs. And lastly we’ll find in this passage that salvation is entirely the result of God’s grace, not our own good deeds. That’s a lot of ground to cover but it’s going to be awesome so let’s get to it! In Chapter 8, Ezra and Nehemiah comfort the afflicted. In Chapter 9, the comfortable are afflicted. Joy and grief are two sides of the same coin. After a thrilling encounter with God, which causes them to break into celebration, the believers now come face to face with their own depravity. What do they go? Stay tuned and let’s find out. In Titus 2 we’re going to find out about detailed instructions The Apostle Paul had for various groups of people within the church. These included older men, older women, younger men and younger women. We’re also going to see that Paul commanded Titus to encourage positive behavior through those instructions and to correct anything which contradicted his teachings. It’s really easy for us to develop misconceptions about the Bible. Three that come to mind are that: 1) It’s too confusing to read, 2) It’s too boring to study and 3) It’s impossible to apply.
