Prayer is one of the overriding themes of the book of Nehemiah and the secret to Nehemiah’s success. The prayer in chap 1 is the first of 12 different prayers recorded in the book. There are prayers of anguish, joy, protection, dependence and commitment. It’s a story of compassionate, persistent, personal and corporate prayer. Prayer gives Nehemiah perspective; it widens his horizons, sharpens his vision and dwarfs his anxieties. Have you ever been greeted by someone in a way that made you feel really special—like you really matter? It makes you feel amazing doesn’t it? Paul had already written to Timothy (1 Tim) and that letter contained a lot of awesome pastoral guidance. But in this second letter Paul gets more personal. In fact in verse 3 he begins by saying, “Timothy, I thank God for you.” We all need to be encouraged especially in being faithful to the Lord. In this closing section of his instructional letter, Paul returned to discussing how Timothy should handle the false teachers in Ephesus. After all, they were one of the causes for this letter. Paul told Timothy to stay away from those who just want to make money from preaching and from those in the church who stray from the sound teachings of the Gospel into controversial arguments. Today we’ll find that Paul was thinking of Timothy’s audience in Ephesus. There, men and women of all ages were under Timothy’s care. Paul thought of the groups within the congregation needing special attention. He wanted Timothy to practice good general principles of personal care and also to deal with some specific people needs. Paul chose the treatment of widows and elders as prime examples. He also had some instructions concerning slaves who were believers. There a lot to talk about today so let’s get started. In today’s study Paul transitions from personal and church policy to the issue of false teachers as they were (and still can be) a threat to the church. Paul knew that their teaching, if left unchecked, would greatly distort Christian truth—and this critical danger would come from within the church. But Paul also will spend time here giving personal instructions for Timothy to take the Ephesian church.
