What Stephen does in Acts 7 is masterful as he retells the history of God’s people, drawing a line from Abraham to the present day. He quotes extensively from the Old Testament to show how far they had fallen. This is the longest sermon in the Book of Acts and is saturated with Scripture. Every point he made was backed up in the Bible, which is an obvious application for each of us. Our values and priorities are reflected in how we use our resources—time, money, strength and talent. Often our actions contradict our words. Last week we were introduced to Stephen who became a key player in resolving an internal conflict in the church. The Edomites were blood relatives of Israel. As the nation of Babylon invaded Judah, the Edomites, of all people, should have rushed to help their brothers and sisters. But instead they gloated over their problems, captured and delivered the Israelites to the Babylonians and even looted their towns. The early Christian church had a big problem. People’s needs were not being met and it led to some hard feelings. In fact, the problem threatened to split the church right down the middle and kill it in its infancy. Only, the church found a way to deal with the problem. Welcome to Part 2 of our study of Joel. Joel’s message to Judah (and to us) is reaching its end. He has described the Immediate Day of the Lord, the terrible plague of the locusts. This led to a description of the Imminent Day of the Lord, the impending invasion of the Assyrian army. The explosive growth of the church led to various reactions from the religious leaders. The Book of Joel is a timeless call to repentance with the promise of blessing. Just as the people faced tragedy with their crops being destroyed, we too will face tragic judgment if we continue in sin. Zephaniah warned the people of Judah that if they refused to repent, the entire nation, including the city of Jerusalem would be lost. The people knew that God would eventually bless them, but Zephaniah made it clear that there would be judgment first, then blessing. God does not take sin lightly and it will be punished.
