Psalm 31 is a passionate lament and psalm of trust written by King David. In today’s journey we’ll witness David pouring out his heart about facing enemies, sickness and betrayal. But we’ll find he ultimately trusts God with his life and future putting it all into God’s caring hands. Today is Jesus’ letter to the 7^th church, Laodicea. This letter was a severe and urgent message. The Laodiceans were smug, self-sufficient and “lukewarm,” having locked Christ out of their lives while falsely believing they needed nothing. Jesus asked them to trade their material complacency for true, spiritual wealth, offering them fellowship and a place to reign with Him. Then came the warning in verse 22 because it functioned as a wake-up call and implored the listeners to heed the warning, abandon their self-reliance and respond to Christ’s invitation to repent. Today, we going to study the 5^th and 6^th churches of Asia Minor—the churches at Sardis and Philadelphia. Many Bible scholars view these two churches as real-world examples of how congregations can lose their way. Sardis represented the danger of having all the right programs and a “good name” but a spiritually dead heart. Most of us have heard the story of Balaam’s donkey in Numbers 22 ever since we were little children. But this is an unusual story for a number of reasons not the least of which is a talking donkey. Today, we’re going to study the fourth of the seven churches of Asia Minor—the church at Thyatira. While commending their growing faith, love and service, Jesus severely rebuked them for tolerating a false prophetess named “Jezebel.” She led believers into sexual immorality and idolatry. We’ll find that Jesus commended the congregation for remaining faithful despite existing in a heavily pagan, hostile environment. Friends, we are in the midst of a battle. Indeed, this is spiritual warfare. We must have a battle plan to fight pornography. Our battle plan must include our recognizing pornography for what it is, who it affects are and how can we bring healing and strategies to turn the tide regarding the devastating influence of pornography in our country. Today’s passage contains Jesus’ letters to the first two of the seven churches: Ephesus and Smyrna.
