Adventurous stories always have elements of danger surrounding the main character (like in Indiana Jones, The Princess Bride, Lord of the Rings or even Shrek). Many times the motivation for the main character is a prince/princess, precious gems or valuable treasure, all of which are strikingly beautiful to the one on the mission. In Acts 3:1-16 we’re presented with a remarkable and inspiring account of the healing of a lame beggar at the Beautiful Gate of the temple in Jerusalem. Like a good movie or story that may have an underlying message, each of the Minor Prophets tells a little bit more of God’s story. Over the course of this study (13-weeks) we are going to learn how huge this ‘message’ or ‘story’ really is as we take a dive into each of the 12 Minor Prophets. Today we’re going to see why these messages are huge and where these stories all began. As you read the Book of Acts you’ll struck by the fact God has always used ordinary people doing ordinary things. We could say it like this: When ordinary people practice obedience, God does extraordinary things. Last time the writer began this last chapter with 3-commands in the first 3-verses: 1) To keep on loving each other, 2) Show hospitality to strangers and 3) Remember those in prison and those who are mistreated. He then presented a series of exhortations that included some social, private and religious exhortations covering such topics as: Honoring marriage; Don’t love money—be satisfied with what we have; The Lord is our helper; Remember the leaders who taught you the Word and Don’t be attracted to strange, new teachings. At this point in The Book of Acts it’s been about 6-weeks since Peter denied Jesus and yet here he is preaching a very persuasive and practical message under the direction of the Holy Spirit. This is a very important sermon and it tells us something about what preaching is. Preaching can be defined as declaring God's truth in Jesus, to the praise of His name.
