The church was a church founded by simple believers who knew that God has called every Christian to serve Him. They proclaimed the Gospel as the power of God for salvation to everyone who believed. They operated by God’s grace, not by legalism. They saw grace as the motivation to go on with the Lord. Their leaders set the example and taught them from God’s Word. They were generous givers, trusting God to meet their needs. And the hand of the Lord was with them and a lot of people were brought to the Lord. But there’s more...let’s talk about it. Chapter 13 is a testament to God’s relentless pursuit of purity and truth among His people. There is some grim imagery in this chapter but despite that the underlying message is one of hope—the hope of cleansing from sin, the end of deceit and the promise of a refined remnant who will call upon the name of the Lord. We’ll find this chapter reminds us of the importance of standing against falsehood, embracing the cleansing God provides and persevering in our faith even amidst trials and tribulations. How do you deal with criticism? Does it bother you when someone criticizes you for something you’ve said or done? Do you get mad and criticize the person right back? Or do you hold it all inside and never really deal with it? Today in Chapter 11 we’re going to see that the Jewish believers in Jerusalem found out that Peter had eaten with Gentiles and they went bonkers. Zechariah 12 offers a stirring insight into the divine plan of God’s protection over Jerusalem and His sovereignty. It’s a profound reminder that God is in control and His plans will ultimately prevail, regardless of the challenges. The mourning for the One Pierced foreshadows the Christ event and our continual need for repentance and forgiveness. Because Peter’s attitude had been adjusted and his actions aligned, he was now ready to preach the Gospel. This is huge because Jews believed they were God’s favorites. However, God always intended to extend His favor to everyone who put faith in Him. Have you ever noticed that the guy driving slower than you is always a jerk, whereas the guy driving faster than you is always a maniac? By fallen nature, we’re all prone to judge others according to outward characteristics, rather than to accept them as individual human beings on an equal par with us. In short, we’re prone toward prejudice in some form or another. Chapter 11 is a poignant reminder of God’s intention for leadership and the dire consequences of misguidance. It calls us to embrace the good shepherd (Christ), respect the unity and favor offered by God and guard against the actions of the worthless shepherd.
