Today, our focus is on the third condition of discipleship, death – take up your cross daily. Each day, every day, today, we must decide to die to self and identify with Christ in surrender, suffering and sacrifice. This is not just an occasional occurrence, only when we feel like it. Feb 7 – Pt 6 – Hebrews – A Call to Spiritual Growth

We live in a world of instant information. There is 24 hour news, Internet sites for anything you can think of and no end of blogs, chat rooms, discussion boards and podcasts. It is not uncommon to see people connected to their phone almost constantly. There is an obsession with staying connected. Ironically, at the same time Biblical literacy is falling rapidly. It also appears that people are doing little to prepare themselves for a vital relationship with God. As we’ll see in today’s study this isn’t new. The writer seems to sense that there are some people who think his teaching is “too deep” and that leads us to today’s study (Heb 5:11-6:12). Feb 4 – Discipleship Matters – Pt 5, If You Want to be My Follower then...

Have you ever heard the phrase “If you want to be a follower then...?”What usually comes next is the requirements you need to do in order to follow. Sometimes those requirements may seem outrageous while other times they may seem like they’re not enough and we say something like “that’s all?!” In Luke 9:23 Jesus makes the statement, “If any of you wants to be My follower [then]...” and He tells them what to do. Jan 28 – Discipleship Matters – Pt 4, Christ Must Come First

Have you ever had to count the cost before doing something? Usually we think about that when considering a major purchase or repair. We want to know what it’s going to cost us in dollars and time. And that kind of decision always impacts the family in one way or another. For many nothing comes before family, not even God. Jan 24 – Pt 3 – Hebrews – Promised Rest for God’s People

Last week the end of chapter 3 explained that the Israelites who rebelled against God never entered God’s “rest” (referring to the Promised Land in verses 18-19). Having shown that Jesus is superior to Moses, the writer now turns to another great Israelite leader, Joshua. God’s servant Joshua led Israel into the Promised Land, yet (as we’ll see) he didn’t provide God’s true “rest”—One greater than Joshua accomplished that. Let’s find out more. Thanks for listening. Jan 17 – Pt 3 – Hebrews – Jesus is Greater Than Moses

Question: How do we put first things first in our lives? We give top attention to God’s work. We seek to follow the will of Jesus in all we do. We focus on Jesus and those tasks which we must do in obedience to Christ Jesus. Also, we neglect those things which do not fit in with His will. Chap 3 of Hebrews contrasts the attention which we must give to Jesus with that attention which some had offered to Moses.
